Plot Analysis
Exposition:
In Georgia, during the 1920's, a young African American girl named Celie is constantly being abused by her Pa. She keeps all of her emotions to herself, and only expresses herself by writing letters to God. She tries her best to get her sister , Nettie, away from Pa; by encouraging Nettie to marry a man named Mr.___ (whose first name is Albert). Unfortunately for Celie, Pa has a different idea. Pa marries Celie to Mr.__, which results to Celie being seperated from her sister and she doesn't get a rest from the abuse she has experienced all her life. |
Rising Action:
2) Mr.__'s lover Shug, stays with him and Celie while she recovers from an illness.
3) Celie slowly becomes Shug's nurse, and eventually they become very close friends.
4) Shug and Celie often talk about things Celie has never had a chance to tell anyone.
5) Together they discover that God is in is in everything around us. They learn about love and their own sexuality.
6) Mr.__ is gone for one day.
7) Shug helps Celie find all of Celie's letters from Nettie that Mr.__ has been hiding for years.
8) Celie reaches her breaking point.
Climax:
9) After they find all of the letters that have been kept from Celie for so long,She finds her voice and goes off on Albert. After reading a letter from Nettie, Celie discovers that Pa isn't her real father. Celie and her new-found independence travel back to Tennessee with Shug. She finds an interest in sewing and begins her own pants company, a further step toward her freedom.She seems genuinely happy for the first time in her life.
Falling Action:
11) Celie retuns home for a few days,and finds out that the man who she thought was her Pa has died.
12) She inherited Pa's house, and makes it her new home.
13) She notices a big change in Mr.__, he becomes a much friendlier person, in Celie's time away. He asks for her hand in marriage, but Celie denies it.
14) Celie gets a letter saying that Nettie and Celie's two children(conceived when Celie was younger and raped by her "Pa"), whom Celie has never had a relationship with have died on a ship home from Africa.But Celie holds strong in her belief that her sister and her children are still alive, and continues to write to Nettie.
Resolution:
17) Nettie and Celie's children return safe from Africa. Celie, being reunited with family, and completely surrounded by love, is the happiest she has ever been. After years of abuse, Celie has finally found Peace
